■ Among the most famous rock’n’roll songs to have been written on a ukulele, ‘Lust For Life’ is probably Iggy Pop’s best known song, having taken on a new lease of life, almost 20 years after its release, when it was used in the cult classic movie Trainspotting. Bowie was reportedly inspired to write the tune after hearing a Morse code-like theme to a US Armed Forces Network news bulletin; he and the Sales brothers then turned it into an irresistible rock’n’roll stomp that recalls, from a rhythmic perspective, The Supremes’ 1966 hit ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’.

Lyrically, however, ‘Lust For Life’ is pure Iggy, a five-minute barrage of warped boasts and truisms, many of them made up, on the spot, as he sang. The song is, in part, a rather hopeful dismissal of his and Bowie’s old ways - “No more beating my brains with liquor and drugs” - supported (or perhaps refuted) by crazed ramblings about stripteases, torture films, and government loans. Most memorably, Iggy confirms himself to be a “modern guy” because, of course, “he’s had it in the ear”. Bowie and the Saleses then chime in with breezy backing vocals in the chorus.
